Social media is a big part of most teens’ lives. Apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok help teens stay connected with friends, share moments, and explore new interests. But while social media can be fun, it can also have a downside—especially when it comes to self-esteem.
Many teens start comparing themselves to others online, leading to feelings of insecurity, sadness, or anxiety. If this sounds like your teen, it might be time to consider teen therapy in Katy, TX.
How Social Media Affects Teen Self-Esteem
Teens often see pictures and videos of people who look perfect, live exciting lives, or seem to always be happy. It’s easy to forget that social media usually only shows the best moments—not the full picture.
Seeing these posts over and over can make teens feel like they’re not good enough. They may start to compare their looks, clothes, or lifestyle to others, which can lead to:
Low self-confidence
Negative body image
Anxiety or depression
Fear of missing out (FOMO)
Pressure to always look or act a certain way
When to Consider Teen Therapy in Katy, TX
If your teen is struggling with self-esteem because of social media, they don’t have to go through it alone. Teen therapy in Katy, TX at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy can offer the support and tools they need to feel better about themselves.
Therapists who work with teens understand the unique challenges that come with social media. They create a safe space where your teen can talk openly about their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Therapy can help teens:
Learn how to set healthy boundaries with social media
Understand how comparison affects their mood
Build a stronger sense of self
Find healthier ways to cope with stress and anxiety

How Parents Can Help
As a parent, you can play a big role in helping your teen manage their relationship with social media. Here are a few tips:
Talk openly about how social media makes them feel
Remind them that what they see online isn’t always real
Encourage offline hobbies and time with friends
Set screen time limits when needed
Model healthy social media habits yourself
Most importantly, be supportive and listen without judgment. If you notice that your teen is constantly down on themselves or pulling away from family and friends, teen counseling might be a good next step.
Teen Therapy Can Make a Real Difference
Self-esteem takes time to build, but with the right support, teens can learn to feel confident and proud of who they are. Therapy can give them the space to understand their thoughts and feelings while building skills for a healthier future.
If your teen is struggling with the effects of social media, therapy for teens in Katy, TX might be the solution they need. It’s never too early—or too late—to get support.

About The Author

I'm Quique (say it like "key+kay"), the co-founder and lead therapist at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy. Working with neurodivergent individuals is my passion. My clients often tell me that they find it easy to relate to me and appreciate my blend of expertise and down-to-earth advice.
For over two decades, I've dedicated my career to supporting neurodivergent individuals. My journey began in youth ministry, transitioned into teaching at a high school tailored for neurodiverse students, and ultimately led me to therapy.
My personal encounter with psychological challenges deeply informs my work. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in my youth and later grappling with OCD as an adult, my therapeutic journey was transformative. It was through engaging with a skilled therapist that I learned to navigate my challenges productively. This experience was so impactful that it propelled me to support other men facing similar neurodiverse challenges.
I'm known for my vibrant personality and my knack for establishing genuine connections with neurodiverse clients. My therapeutic approach is engaging, focused on solutions, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.
Outside of my professional life, I'm a family man, blessed with a loving wife, four children, and two dogs—a pug and a French bulldog. My hobbies include writing, podcasting, exercising, watching TV, and spending quality time with friends.
Feel free to contact me. I would love to know how I can support you on your therapy journey.
