It’s normal for teens to have quiet moments. But if your teen is becoming more withdrawn or refuses to talk about what’s going on, it might be more than just needing space. As a parent, it can be hard to know the difference between a teen who’s simply quiet and one who is emotionally shutting down.
In this blog, we’ll explore some signs that your teen may need help and how teen therapy in Katy can offer support.
What’s the Difference Between Being Quiet and Shutting Down?
Some teens are naturally quiet. They prefer listening over talking and may enjoy spending time alone. This is part of their personality.
But shutting down is different. It can look like:
• Refusing to talk about their feelings
• Staying in their room all day
• Avoiding friends or family
• Ignoring texts or calls
• Seeming numb or emotionless
When a teen shuts down, they may be struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, or other emotional pain. They may not know how to talk about it—or they may not feel safe enough to try.
Why Do Teens Shut Down?
There are many reasons why a teen might shut down. Some common causes include:
• School stress – Too much pressure can leave them feeling overwhelmed.
• Social struggles – Bullying or friendship problems can cause deep emotional hurt.
• Family conflict – Arguments or divorce can make teens feel unsafe or unsure.
• Mental health issues – Anxiety, depression, and trauma can all lead to shutting down.
Teens often don’t have the tools to handle these challenges alone. When they feel stuck, shutting down may seem like the only way to cope.

Signs It’s Time to Seek Help From a Teen Therapist
If your teen:
• Has stopped doing things they used to enjoy
• Sleeps too much or not enough
• Is eating much more or much less than usual
• Has big mood swings
• Talks about feeling hopeless or worthless
…it may be time to talk to a teen therapist. A therapist can help your teen express what’s going on inside in a safe, non-judgmental space.

About The Author

I'm Quique (say it like "key+kay"), the co-founder and lead therapist at The Neurodiversity Center of Katy. Working with neurodivergent individuals is my passion. My clients often tell me that they find it easy to relate to me and appreciate my blend of expertise and down-to-earth advice.
For over two decades, I've dedicated my career to supporting neurodivergent individuals. My journey began in youth ministry, transitioned into teaching at a high school tailored for neurodiverse students, and ultimately led me to therapy.
My personal encounter with psychological challenges deeply informs my work. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in my youth and later grappling with OCD as an adult, my therapeutic journey was transformative. It was through engaging with a skilled therapist that I learned to navigate my challenges productively. This experience was so impactful that it propelled me to support other men facing similar neurodiverse challenges.
I'm known for my vibrant personality and my knack for establishing genuine connections with neurodiverse clients. My therapeutic approach is engaging, focused on solutions, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.
Outside of my professional life, I'm a family man, blessed with a loving wife, four children, and two dogs—a pug and a French bulldog. My hobbies include writing, podcasting, exercising, watching TV, and spending quality time with friends.
Feel free to contact me. I would love to know how I can support you on your therapy journey.
